FAQs
What is a Shoji?Shoji (pronounced “show-g”) is a door, window or room divider used in traditional Japanese architecture, consisting of translucent sheets (typically washi - traditional Japanese paper) on a lattice frame. They typically slide on wooden tracks that run on the top and bottom. but can also be used as a fixed panel feature.
Our shojis are individually crafted by hand in our workshop located in Jalan Pemimpin (Marymount), Singapore.

What materials are used for your shoji screens? Our shoji frames are made from New Zealand pine, a durable and versatile wood. (Hinoki available upon request!)
It features a clean light wood color, ranging from creamy white to pale yellow with occasional darker streaks. It is durable, versatile, and ages beautifully over time.
They can also be stained to achieve darker colors to suit different styles of homes.
For the screen panels, we offer:
Washi paper: Traditional and lightweight, ideal for classic aesthetics.
Waterproof washi: Perfect for those looking for a lower maintenance option, while still retaining the raw, textured look of washi.
Acrylic (clear or frosted): A durable, modern option for kitchens, vanity rooms or homes with children and/or pets.
Glass: A good option for home offices or commercial spaces.
Each material suits different lifestyles and purposes, so we recommend considering how you’ll primarily use the shoji before choosing a material.
Feel free to contact us for tailored advice.
Are your shojis customisable?
Yes, we craft each shoji screen to order, allowing you to specify dimensions, screen material, and design details to suit your space.
How do I maintain my shoji screens?
As with all solid wood furnitures, try to avoid exposing the wooden structure to water and wipe off with a dry cloth if wet.
For shojis with washi screens, use a soft bristled brush to lightly dust off the surface and use a damp cloth to carefully wipe the wooden areas.
Acrylic and glass screens can be wiped off easily with a wet cloth.
What type of wood do you use, and what are its characteristics?
For other furniture categories, we also work with hardwood like Cherry, Walnut and Maple that are more dense with richer natural tones.
Walnut: A strong, dark wood with a rich chocolate-brown color and straight grain - It ages gracefully, developing a warm patina over time.
Cherry: Typically reddish-brown tones that deepen with age, but may sometimes come in a lighter pinkish shade.
Cherry wood has a fine, straight grain and can act as a nice accent piece to have in a home with fairly light colors.
Maple: A light-colored hardwood with a smooth, uniform grain - often used for furniture requiring strength and a clean, contemporary look.
Why does some of my furniture have variations in color or grain?
Wood is a natural material, and every piece is unique. Variations in grain patterns, color tones, and occasional knots are inherent
to solid wood and highlight its natural beauty. These features are not considered flaws or defects and will not be grounds for refunds or exchanges.
What if I prefer a more uniform look?
If you cannot accept natural variations and prefer a consistent, uniform appearance, we suggest considering alternatives like
laminates or engineered materials. These materials offer a standardized finish but are not supplied by us, as we specialize in solid wood furniture.
How do I care for solid wood furniture?
- Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
- Wipe down stains and spills, then dry off with a dry cloth after each use.
- Use coasters, placemats, or tablecloths to protect surfaces from spills or scratches.
- Reapply protective finishes annually to lengthen its lifespan to last generations.
- If you live in an area that is particularly moist, you may consider getting a dehumidifier to prevent moisture being trapped and mould growth
on not just furnitures, but floorings or anything that may be in wood.
What is the lead time to complete an order?
Our lead time is 6 to 8 weeks after confirmation of design.
As each piece is made carefully by hand, please allow for ample time in the planning of your homes and projects.
We do not take on rush orders.
