FAQs
\Before reaching out, please take time to go through our FAQ.
This page covers everything you need to know to understand our handcrafted shoji systems and how to begin your enquiry.
What is a Shoji?
Shoji is a traditional Japanese sliding door or screen made of a wooden lattice frame with translucent paper or panel inlays. It diffuses light beautifully and adds a sense of calm, subtlety, and spatial flow.
Shoji can be used for:
- Sliding Room Doors
- Standalone Dividers
- Window Screens for privacy and light filtering
We design and build modern interpretations rooted in traditional craft, made for contemporary homes.
What types of Shoji do you make?
We currently offer three classic types:1. Standard Shoji – timeless and versatile in every setting
2. Yukimi (雪見障子) – lower half panel can be pulled up to admire snow traditionally; suited for garden areas
3. Tsukimi (月見障子) – top half panel can be pulled down to admire the moon or sky, suited for tall spaces or transoms.
Each style is custom-built to fit your space.
Track Systems Available (For Doors)
Traditionally, shoji doors run on a wooden track system, installed at both the ceiling and the floor. This system offers a grounded and tactile sliding experience, preserving the balance and proportion of classic shoji construction.
However, to accommodate modern city living where doors often need to be taller - we’ve raised the maximum height to 2.1m.
We offer two types of track systems depending on your site conditions and preferred look:
1. Wooden Tracks (Top + Bottom Track)Installed on both ceiling and floor
Smooth sliding with traditional aesthetic
Height restriction: Max 2.1m
2. Top Hung Tracks (Ceiling only)No floor track needed - only small floor guides
Requires solid overhead structure (concrete / wooden or steel reinforcements for false ceilings)
Only available with acrylic panels or hybrid washi-acrylic due to structural requirements.
Height restriction: Max 2.2m
If your height is taller than 2.2m, you may consider a false ceiling to lower the height.
Please reach out if unsure.

Why the height limitation?
We believe shoji should feel light, gentle, and proportionate to the human scale. Going beyond 2.1m not only risks the door looking oversized or towering over you, but also causes functional issues as overly tall panels on a wooden track will rack and slide poorly over time. It simply loses the feel we’re after.

What information do I need to provide for an enquiry?
To give you an accurate quotation and feasibility check, please include the following when reaching out:
1. Width x Height of opening (in mm / cm)
2. Type of home (e.g. HDB, landed, condo)
3. Shoji type – Standard, Yukimi, or Tsukimi
4. Track type – Wooden or Top Hung (leave blank for windows)
5. Wood tone preference – Natural (light) or Dark
6. Preferred wood – Pine, Stained Pine, or Hinoki
7. Timeline – When you’re hoping to have it installed
This helps us respond efficiently and determine fit before moving into deeper consultation.
Restrictions to keep in mind
For Wooden Track Systems: max panel height is 2.1m
For Top Hung Systems: max panel height is 2.2m
- For ceiling heights exceeding this, a false ceiling drop is recommended to accommodate our system.
We do not recommend using shoji in areas that are wet e.g. shower room / pool area
